"I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them". Pablo Picasso. This is one of my favorite quotes and is an inspiration for my work and something that I would love to share with this workshop. Painting things to look three dimensional and real is not a rule but a choice. If you always start your work with the same conventional approach and goal, you will have difficulty making your work distinctive or expressive. We will begin by sketching several small drawings using a limited number of shapes, perhaps as little as two. You may use reference photos if you choose. The drawing will then be created as a collage. The collage functions only as a catalyst for your imagination. The collage can reveal unique shapes, textures, unusual juxtapositions and might enable you to let go and push beyond what you have done before. The end result will be a painting using the collage as the jumping off point. We are going to make a leap, find that moment when you are willing to experiment, a fresh way of seeing things, updating, adding to or inventing a new visual vocabulary, a reminder and refresher, it is about a dictionary of possibilities. Allow your imagination to dictate, direct or suggest what will happen on the paper as you make contact with materials, tools and sensations. Take one or both of Nancy's workshops!
